講   題：Smarter User Interfaces for Smart Mobile Devices and Medical Applications

摘   要：

    Multi-touch user interfaces has sparked a new era in human-computer interaction, but the smart devices we use everyday are still not very smart in many ways. For example, today’s smartphones and tablets often rotate screens incorrectly, because they rotate screens based on gravity instead of users’ reading orientation.

In this talk, I will first present an overview of the evolution of user interfaces over the last 30 years. I will then present several enabling technologies that provide smarter user interfaces and explore future interaction possibilities, including tangible, tactile, and grasp-based interfaces:
  - TUIC: enabling tangible interaction on capacitive multi-touch displays.
   - Clip-on Gadgets: expanding multi-touch interaction area with unpowered tactile controls.
   - iRotate: automatic screen rotation based on face orientation.
   - iSpine: A Motion-Sensing Edutainment System for Improving Children’s Spinal Health

演講大綱：With aggressive technology scaling, the accurate and efficient modeling and simulation of interconnect effects are problems of central importance. In a three-dimensional interconnect structure there can be a significant amount of coupling, both inductive and capacitive, between interconnects. Models that capture these effects tend to involve large matrices, resulting in extraordinary demands on memory. Moreover, simulation with these models requires prohibitive amounts of computation. In this talk, we present a formulation for typical VLSI interconnect structures that, in addition to providing a compact set of modeling equations, also offers a potential for exploiting sparsity at the simulation level. The numerical efficiency of our approach is realized through linear-algebraic techniques that exploit the sparsity and structure of the matrices that are encountered in VLSI structures. Numerical results show that our approach is orders-of-magnitude faster than commercial-grade SPICE with little sacrifice in simulation accuracy.

講者簡介：Cheng-Kok Koh received the B.S. degree with first class honors and the M.S. degree, both in computer science, from the National University of Singapore in 1992 and 1996, respectively. He received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from University of California at Los Angeles in 1998. Currently, he is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. His research interests include physical design of VLSI circuits and modeling and analysis of large-scale systems. Dr. Koh was the recipient of the 1990 Lim Soo Peng Book Prize for Best Computer Science Student presented by the National University of Singapore, and the Tan Kah Kee Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship (1993 and 1994), the GTE Fellowship and the Chorafas Foundation Prize presented by UCLA (1995 and 1996), the 1998 ACM Special Interest Group on Design Automation (SIGDA) Meritorious Service Award and Distinguished Service Award, the 1999 Chicago Alumni Award presented by Purdue University, the 2000 National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the 2002 ACM/SIGDA Distinguished Service Award.

演講大綱：The promise of LTE Advanced as next generation of mobile broadband offers huge potential to service providers, application developers and wireless consumers. LTE Advanced focus on speed and capacity. For example for low mobility the data rate should be at 1Gbps for low leading wireless mobile broadband technology and offers high spectral efficiency, low latency and high peak data rates. To improve further the speed and spectral efficiency, LTE Advanced provide the features such as carrier aggregation, enhanced multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) and heterogeneous network. LTE Advanced has being selected by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as the technology for IMT Advanced for future mobile broadband.  The presentation will cover the evolution from 3G (UMTS) towards 4G (LTE) and beyond 4G (LTE Advanced).

Meng Chang Chen received the BS and MS degrees in Computer Science from National Chiao-Tung University, Taiwan, and the PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1989. He was with AT&T Bell Labs from 1989 to 1992. He then joined Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. From 1999 to 2002 and from 2008 to 2010, he served as Deputy Director of the institute. From 2000 to 2003, he served as the chair of Standards and Technology Transfer group of the National Science & Technology Program for Telecommunications Office (NTPO). His current research interests include wireless networks, mobile computing, information retrieval, and data and knowledge engineering.

演講大綱:

The PLASH platform is designed to help location-aware service (LAS) providers deploy their applications easily so that users may contribute their efforts and location-related data by using the services, which is the main difference from traditional location-aware services. The collective efforts and data that may be generated by humans or sensors (or both) can be used to help solve difficult location aware problems, such as real-time road network traffic estimation, city panoramas and social networking analysis. The PLASH platform is designed with consideration of openness and scalability. Seasoned application builders can contribute their mature applications as a PLASH service component for other application builders to expand and create more sophisticated applications. In addition, PLASH provides an application specification language and GUI for easy application development.

Dr. Jeng-Rern Yang Received his Ph.D. degree in E.E. from National Tsing Hua University in 1988. He majored in solid state electronics and participated in Taiwan High Tech Research Center for microwave circuit development. He has been with Yuan-Ze University since 1996 as associate professor of Department of Communications Engineering. He has good experiences in RF integrated circuit design and led several industrial, academic, and research projects. Dr. Yang founded Gemtek Technology Co., Ltd., a worldwide communication manufacturer and is listed in Taiwan, with Howard Chen in 1992 and has been executive BoD up to the present. He is also the president of Browan Communications Inc., an internet telecom company invested by Gemtek. He was granted Distinguished Alumni of National Tsing Hua University Science College in 2004 and Distinguished Alumni of National Tsing Hua University E.E. College in 2009.

Fu-Hau Hsu received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Stony Brook University, New York, USA in Dec. 2004. He is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Central University, Taiwan, R.O.C. His research interests include system security, mobile device security, web security, information hiding, operating system, and networking.

演講大綱:

In the near several decades, the arms race between malware writers and antivirus programmers has become more and more severe. The simplest way for a computer user to secure his computer is to install antivirus software on his computer. As antivirus software becomes more sophisticated and powerful, evading the detection of antivirus software becomes an important part of malware. As a result, malware writers have developed various approaches to increase the survivability and concealment of their malware. One of these technologies is to terminate antivirus software right after the execution of the malware. In this talk, we propose a mechanism, called ANtivirus Software Shield (ANSS), to prevent antivirus software from being terminated without the consciousness of the antivirus software users. ANSS uses SSDT (System Service Descriptor Table) hooking to intercept specific Windows APIs and analyzes them to filter out hazardous API calls that will terminate antivirus software. When using several pieces of malware that can terminate various brands of antivirus applications to make our experiments, the results show that ANSS can protect antivirus software from being terminated by them with at most 0.42% CPU performance overhead and 1.77% memory write performance overhead.

Chien-Hung Yeh received his PhD degree from the Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering, National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 2004. He is a Principal Researcher with Information and Communications Research Laboratories (ICL), Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Taiwan, for leading the Advanced Project of Optical Access Networks. Dr. Yeh’s major research interests are optical fiber communication, TDM-, WDM- and ROF-PON access, WiMAX-ROF in high-speed rail (HSR), fiber laser and amplifier, optical sensor, THz-ROF, and Green LED communication etc. He has published more 150 Journal papers and 95 International Conference papers in his research areas, and holds over 29 patents.

葉建宏在 2004 年於交通大學光電所取得博士學位，他現在任職於工研院資通所擔任正研究員一職。其主要研發院內寬頻光纖接取網路、光纖到家、光纖載微波、兆赫波通訊及 LED 可見光通訊等等相關技術。葉博士個人已經發表超過 150 篇國際期刊論文、 95 篇國際會議論文及獲證 29 件國內外專利。

演講大綱:

TDM and WDM-PONs have been extensively studied for fiber to the home (FTTH) access applications due to the advantages of high-speed, huge-capacity, and cost-effectiveness etc. Because of the high bandwidth demand (towards Exabyte (1018)) in the future, the present TDM-PON could not support this requirement. To solve this issue, hybrid WDM-TDM PON will be clearly emerging technology for next-generation access. However, in such WDM-PONs, multi-wavelength sources are required in central office (CO) to produce the downstream data to different optical network unit (ONU). And, each ONU also requires a specific-wavelength to match with the corresponding wavelength at the CO. Thus, a wavelength-tunable laser is demanded in each ONU for generating upstream signal. Even though it is workable to employ a tunable laser source at each ONU, the laser source is still costly in WDM-PON access. It may also delay the development of WDM-PON. Hence, carrier-distribution PON access has been studied to overcome the high deployment cost in WDM-TDM PON.

講    題：Program Debugging with Effective Software Fault Localization

大綱：
Program debugging is an important activity in the development of reliable and trustworthy software. This activity can be very expensive and time consuming due to the difficulty of identifying the exact locations of program faults. In this talk, I will explain how to take advantage of sophisticated analysis of the static and dynamic behavior of the software under examination to prioritize suspicious code in terms of its likelihood of containing program bugs. Code with a higher risk can then be examined before that with a lower risk, as the former is more suspicious (more likely to contain program bugs) than the latter. Different techniques for fault localization based on execution slicing, code coverage, heuristics, neural networks, statistical analysis and fuzzy clustering will be discussed. Empirical data from case studies on programs with single and multiple bugs is used to show that our techniques outperform others that have the same goal.

One of the most significant challenges in assuring the safe and secure operation of a software system is how to generate a small suite of test inputs designed to reveal program bugs, safety violations, or security vulnerabilities both efficiently and effectively. In this talk, we will discuss how to use sophisticated static and dynamic analyses to automate the test generation process for structural-based coverage testing (such as all nodes and all edges) and CEFSM-based communication testing (such as send-receiver pair, round-trip, and n-step message transfer). An innovative approach for testing software safety will also be discussed. The same approach can be extended to test software security.

    In this talk I will first introduce the facts and trends of smart handheld devices and cloud applications/services. Under the new user-centric and service-oriented prospective, Taiwan needs to enhance cloud applications/services and flexible business models (e.g., web-based marketplace, social networking, etc.) in order to strengthen our industrial value chain and improve our ICT ecosystem. At ITRI we have been devoting ourselves to ICT technology research and development for decades. In my talk, I will also highlight some of ITRI’s latest R&D projects and achievements related to smart handheld devices and cloud applications.

De-Nian Yang is an associate research fellow in Institute of Information Science and Research Center for Information Technology Innovation, Academia Sinica. His research interests include mobile multimedia networking and social networks. For mobile multimedia networking, the research results include new approximation algorithms for mobile routing applications, new mobile video streaming frameworks, and various algorithms on multicast and network coding. For social networks, the research spans social query and privacy preserving. His research results have been published in ACM, KDD, VLDB, CIKM, CHI, and IEEE INFOCOM, ICNP, TMM, TMC, TKDE, TPDS, and TVT. He is now an associate editor of Elsevier Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation and serves as TPC members of many IEEE conferences. He received the Best Student Paper Award from IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (IEEE ICME), Emerging Technology Award from ACM SIGGRAPH Asia, Career Development Award in Academia Sinica, Project for Excellent Junior Research Investigators from NSC, and Research Exploration Award from Pan Wen Yuan Foundation. He is a senior member of IEEE and a member of ACM.

演講大綱:

With the rapid advance of mobile communications and computing technologies, mobile devices now serve as the universal platform of intelligent mobile networking and computing. In this talk, we will first introduce network coding for mobile caching. In contrast to most network coding literature relying on multicast/broadcast, our approach seamless integrates network coding in the current mobile client/server architecture and requires no modification on the existing wireless/wireline network infrastructure. Afterward, we will introduce a new collaborative search framework with mobile devices for disaster rescue and patrol, which still mostly rely on manual coordination nowadays. A 3-approximation algorithm will be present to search an area with the minimum time, together with a distributed algorithm to properly handle dynamic load balancing after the search starts. Finally, we will introduce group formation in social networks. Social, spatial, and temporal dimensions are jointly explored to find the optimal group for automatic activity planning, while implementation on Facebook and Google Maps will also be presented.

Speaker’s Profile: Dr. Duh is the Co-director of Keio-NUS CUTE Centre and, a joint faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Interactive and Digital Media Institute at National University of Singapore. He received his degrees in psychology, design and engineering respectively. After finishing his PhD, he went to NASA-Johnson Space Centre as a postdoctoral fellow involving in virtual reality training project.  Dr. Duh is a Senior Member of both ACM and IEEE, the Singapore Representative of the International Federation of Information Processing Technical Committee on Human-Computer Interaction (IFIP TC13) and Entertainment Computing (TC14); Steering committee member of Asia Pacific CHI conference. He is the Associate Editor of ACM Entertainment in Computer and published more than 90 conference and journal papers in HCI area. Dr. Duh has served the program/organizing committee for IEEE/ACM International Symposium of Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR) and IEEE Virtual Reality for years. He is the program co-chair of Arts, Media and Humanities track of IEEE ISMAR 2012 and 2013. His current research focuses on user experience and interaction design, augmented reality and gaming effects in mobile systems.  Dr. Duh is a private pilot and certified advanced ground instructor by the FAA.  

Abstract: Augmented Reality (AR) is one of the emerging technologies and prevailing research areas in recent years. It gives numerous opportunities to create new interaction style and user experiences. In such highly integrated area, there are many disciplines contributed to AR research such as computer vision, tracking technologies, human-computer interaction etc. The presentation will give an overview of AR, discuss the current state-of-the-art progress and future research directions. The speaker will also share his view of the AR development in Asia and the world.

摘要 Abstract:

Computation has been recognized as a new and fundamental paradigm
for our culture and society.  In particular, it provide us with a
new approach for various scientific/engineering research.  As one
typical example, we discuss in this lecture the computational
view of randomness.  We show that the randomness notion can be
clarified mathematically through computation; we also show some
practical application of this new view point. Also we discuss
the way to use randomness in computation.

This is a general introductory survey talk and no specific
prior knowledge is necessary.  Some of the topics are from his
survey article but some recent topics will be also added.
